Rent College Properties, a new rental property location service for college students, announced today plans for an exciting scholarship competition. At stake is $10,000 in scholarship money and a position within the company. The scholarship competition will run from April 6 until July 31.

Grand Rapids, MI April 6, 2009 -- Today Rent College Properties, a new web-based rental property location service for college students, is asking college students a question: So you think you can sell? The college student who is able to sell the most memberships for Rent College Properties will win a $10,000 college scholarship. This competition is not based on essay submissions, interviews, where you grew up, what hand you write with, or any other obscure factor. Instead it is determined by your ability to sell! In this economy, who couldn't use more money for college? There is a catch though: individuals who finish the competition within the top ten will be interviewed for a position within Rent College Properties!

The scholarship competition will start April 6, 2009 and will conclude July 31, 2009. Rob Freidhoff, founder of Rent College Properties, shared that during the competition students will have access to email templates, video tutorials, and other sales tools created to help participants be successful in the competition. Final standings will be determined based on the number of total points accumulated during the competition. To get more details on the specifics of the competition, go to rentcollegeproperties.com. To enter the competition students must create a free renter account and then sign-up for the Rent College Properties Scholarship Competition.

The initial feedback we have been receiving to date has been overwhelmingly positive from students and landlords alike
Rent College Properties strongly believes in the social power of the internet. We also believe college students are highly competitive and look for opportunities to excel outside of the classroom, and in fact, some students might even be able to use this competition to gain college credit. Couple these two factors together and we have the makings of an intense scholarship competition
Rent College Properties officially launched March 30, 2009 at Grand Valley State University, located in Allendale, Michigan. The Rent College Properties site is simple to use and feature rich. "The initial feedback we have been receiving to date has been overwhelmingly positive from students and landlords alike," according to Freidhoff. New features will be coming online in the next few weeks as more feedback and discussions are had with landlords and students.

Freidhoff cited two points when asked why his company was offering out this college scholarship competition. "Rent College Properties strongly believes in the social power of the internet. We also believe college students are highly competitive and look for opportunities to excel outside of the classroom, and in fact, some students might even be able to use this competition to gain college credit. Couple these two factors together and we have the makings of an intense scholarship competition". Earning a $10,000 scholarship while landing a job at the same time sounds like a great way to spend the summer.

Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation also Awards College/Vocational Funds to Children of Former and Current Marines

Alexandria, VA—Scholarships for higher education are available to children of Marines and former Mar ines through the non-profit, non-partisan Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation (MCSF).  Particular attention is given to children whose parent was killed or wounded in action.

Scholarship awards are based on financial need; the average household income of scholarship recipients is currently $41,000.  Scholarships range from $1,000 to $10,000, and can be renewed annually based on satisfactory academic performance.  The Foundation also provides a $30,000 Heroes Tribute Scholarship to every child of a Marine and every child of a Navy Corpsman serving with the Marines whose parent is killed in the war on terrorism.

The application deadline for students currently attending college or have previously attended college is April 15. March 1 was the deadline20for current high school students.

The Foundation provides college and vocational scholarships to deserving sons and daughters of Marines. Founded in 1962, MCSF has awarded more than 22,000 scholarships totaling $39 million.  For the 2008-2009 academic year, the Foundation awarded $4.5 million to 1,395 students.  MCSF currently has an annual budget of $10 million, and an endowment of $15 million.

The Foundation’s revenue comes entirely from private sources--donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations as well as endowment income.  Significant revenue is also generated through volunteers around the country who lead events such as golf tournaments and dinner galas.

MCSF is currently conducting a $50 million fundraising campaign. Three objectives of=2 0the campaign include increasing the Foundation’s average annual scholarship to at least $5,000 and to fully fund the Heroes Tribute Scholarships; and develop a sustainable income stream that includes increasing the endowment in order to serve the next generation of Marine families. The foundation will mark its 50th anniversary in 2012.

This week, MCSF announced the appointment of Margaret Bergan Davis as its President and Chief Executive Officer. With 27 years experience in senior leadership, development, and advancement with non-profit organizations on the civic and national levels, Davis brings a record of achievement that spans from strategic planning and board development to major capital campaigns and annual giving.  She has both held senior executive positions with and been of counsel to many national organizations.  Most recently she served as Associate Dean for Adva ncement at Washington National Cathedral increasing its program visibility and helping to guide its centennial celebration.

“Margaret Davis brings a wealth of non-profit organization management and fundraising experience as well as a deep affinity for and knowledge of the Marine Corps to the Scholarship Foundation.  She is a very highly qualified leader joining us at the right time in our history,” said General William L. “Spider” Nyland USMC (Ret), Chairman of the Foundation Board of Directors.

Davis, the granddaughter of a World War I Marine corporal, was active in the leadership of Marine Corps family programs for more than 15 years, including participation in the select task force that created the Corps’ formal family support program in 1992, membership on the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ subcommittee on family readiness since 2000, and service as volunteer advisor for several major20commands, including Marine Forces Europe, Marine Corps Mobilization Command and the 4th Marine Logistics Group.  She was awarded the Department of the Navy Superior Public Service Award in 2008.

Davis was a member of the senior leadership team of the Ravinia Music Festival (the Nation’s oldest and most extensive music festival) under Zarin Mehta and was a development officer with Northwestern University. She also was director of the Corporate Project, a consortium of non-public secondary schools in the Midwest.  As a consultant, she was instrumental in advising Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Arena Stage, Shedd Aquarium (Chicago), Signature Theatre (New York), National Children’s Museum, and the National Cathedral on raising hundreds of millions of dollars and achieving successful plans for their futures.

Davis succeeds Chris Randol ph as president and CEO of the Foundation. Mr. Randolph stepped down in December due to health reasons.

“Project Working Mom…and Dads, Too!” Helps Working Parents go Back to School Through More than $2 Million in Scholarships

eLearners.com Teams Up with Five Online Colleges and Universities to Send Moms and Dads Back to School Tuition Free

Hoboken, NJ, January 8, 2009 – eLearners.com, a leading website that connects students with online education, today announced its new campaign to help both working moms and dads return to school.  “Project Working Mom…and Dads, Too!” is a full-ride online college scholarship campaign, which will award approximately 60 scholarships, totaling more than $2 million.  Ashford University, Capella University, Everest University, Virginia College and Ashworth College are the five accredited online universities that are sponsoring the campaign.  This campaign is a follow-up to the overwhelming demand from the initial two Project Working Mom campaigns in 2008.  Those campaigns received more than 120,000 scholarship applications for more than $4 million in scholarships, and sent nearly 100 working moms back to school tuition free.

“When we launched Project Working Mom around this time last year we had no idea what to expect.  We knew we wanted to help moms go back to school to improve their lives and the lives of their family, but little did we know how much pent up demand and stories there were among moms who wanted to go back to school,” said Helen MacDermott, a representative from Project Working Mom.  “During the first two campaigns, we would receive letters from working dads about tuition relief and this campaign helps to address the needs of all working parents.”

Project Working Mom…and Dads, Too!” is designed to help the approximately 84% of single working moms and dads who don’t have a bachelor’s degree by  removing the barriers of time, money and confidence that many people face when deciding whether to go back to school. The flexible nature of online education allows working parents to find the time to complete their studies and through the comprehensive Project Working Mom website (http://www.projectworkingmom.com), working moms and dads can get the knowledge and support they need to feel confident about returning to school.

“For the first time ever, American children are less likely than their parents to graduate high school,” said Carey Casey, CEO of the National Center for Fathering and fathers.com and author of the upcoming book, Championship Fathering.  “This is a wake up call to parents that they must serve as role models and set the educational priority.  Project Working Mom…and Dads, Too! removes the barriers and gives parents the opportunity to pursue the education they need to fulfill their dreams and the dreams they have set for their family.”

The full-ride online college scholarships through “Project Working Mom…and Dads, Too!” are for online programs that range from certificates, associates and bachelors degrees to Masters and Ph.D. level programs.  To apply for a scholarship, working moms and dads must complete a short application at http://www.projectworkingmom.com.  They will also need to complete an essay that outlines their education and career goals and explain how an online program will enable them to achieve their goals.  The deadline to apply for a scholarship is April 30, 2009.

"I worked with eLearners.com on the second Project Working Mom campaign and it was so inspiring to see women's dreams come true as they received the scholarship," said Stephanie Clark, the founder & CEO of My Daughter's Keeper, Inc., a non-profit organization empowering mothers, daughters, women and girls and a mother/daughter relationship coach.  "Education is a powerful force and the best example for kids is for them to see their parents practicing what they preach and getting a college education for themselves."

Editor’s Note:  To interview one of the scholarship recipients from the 2008 Project Working Mom campaigns; a member of Project Working Mom; a member of National Center for Fathering; Stephanie Clark, the founder & CEO of My Daughter’s Keeper; or a member of the participating universities, contact Jenny Foust at 303.433.7020, jfoust@csg-pr.com

Sports: The 2008 Liberty Mutual Coach Of The Year Award

The Best Of College Football: Nick Saban, Mickey Matthews, Chuck Broyles, And Larry Kehres Honored For Responsibility, Integrity And Coaching Excellence With The 2008 Liberty Mutual Coach Of The Year Award

Winning College Football Coaches Receive a Combined $240,000 to Donate for Charity and Scholarship

They share a collective belief that how you win is every bit as important as winning itself. They value and demonstrate respect, sportsmanship and civic involvement, and have left a positive footprint on their universities, their student-athletes, and their communities.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) January 1, 2009 -- Every college football coach shares a love of the game and tenacity to win, yet four coaches share the distinct honor of this year's best display of success, integrity, and sportsmanship both on and off the field. University of Alabama Coach Nick Saban, James Madison University Coach Mickey Matthews, Pittsburg (Kan.) State University Coach Chuck Broyles, and Mount Union College Coach Larry Kehres are the 2008 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award winners.

Liberty Mutual 2008 Coach of the Year

Each winning college football coach receives $50,000 from Liberty Mutual Insurance to support his favorite charity and $20,000 in scholarship funding for his school's alumni association. Now in its third year, the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year charitable and scholarship donations total $680,000. The winners also will be recognized in the permanent Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year display at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind.

''These four coaches represent all that is great about college football,'' said Archie Manning, chair of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame. "They share a collective belief that how you win is every bit as important as winning itself. They value and demonstrate respect, sportsmanship and civic involvement, and have left a positive footprint on their universities, their student-athletes, and their communities."

Coaches Saban, Matthews, Broyles and Kehres were chosen through fan votes at selection committee of College Football Hall of Fame players and coaches and the national media based on their on-field coaching results, sportsmanship and integrity, academic excellence of their student-athletes, and their community commitment. Fan votes accounted for 20 percent of each coach's final score while the College Football Hall of Famers and national college football media accounted for 55 percent and 25 percent, respectively.

2008 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award Winners

Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A) - Nick Saban, University of Alabama

When Nick Saban's Crimson Tide took the Georgia Dome field in August, hopes were high to improve on last year's 7-6 season. That first-game victory over Clemson was the beginning of Alabama's resurrection in the SEC and countrywide, and led to an undefeated regular season and, ultimately, a Sugar Bowl date with Utah on January 2 in New Orleans. The 12-win campaign set the school record for the largest increase in wins from year one to year two for a Crimson Tide head coach.

Leading a team that commits, on average, 30 percent fewer penalties than its conference foes is a big reason Coach Saban enjoyed such a tremendous season on the field. And off the field, Saban is equally poised for success as a philanthropist and mentor. The Nick's Kids Fund he started when coaching at Michigan State continues to be a shining example of Saban's concern for disadvantaged children, and since arriving in Tuscaloosa the Fund has distributed more than $540,000 to 115 charities. And this past June, Saban and his wife, Terry, announced a $1 million gift to benefit Alabama's first-generation scholarship program. Community involvement extends to the players as well, with many participating in a local Life Skills program as well as helping to raise funds for Alabama libraries.

Crimson Tide student-athletes also benefit from Saban's guidance in the classroom. His published mission statement for his team reads, "[Graduating from college is going to have the greatest impact on the quality of your life forever." And Alabama's rising Academic Progress Rate is evidence of his commitment to their education.

Football Championship Subdivision (Division I-AA) - Mickey Matthews, James Madison University

Coach Mickey Matthews's tenth campaign at the helm of the James Madison football team was marked by an undefeated Colonial Athletic Conference record (8-0) and 12-game winning streak that brought the team to the FCS semifinals before dropping to eventual national runner-up Montana. One element of coaching excellence is team discipline, an area in which the Dukes excelled this year having committed nearly 20 percent fewer penalties than the CAA average. Coach Matthews's student-athletes are equally disciplined in the classroom, continually producing strong Academic Progress Rates.

Division II - Chuck Broyles, Pittsburg State University

Pittsburg State (Kan.) Coach Chuck Broyles recently completed his 19th season as head football coach at his alma mater, guiding the Gorillas to an 11-2 overall record, a 15th appearance in the NCAA Division II national playoffs, and a eighth-place ranking in the AFCA Division II year-end poll. In the classroom, the Pitt State football squad produced two Academic All-Americans in 2008 and six in the past three years. Forty-four percent of the Gorilla football players currently maintain 3.0 GPAs or higher. Broyles' civic and charitable contributions have been far and wide-ranging; including organizing an annual YMCA Youth Football Day; coordinating team involvement in Project Franklin, a restoration project in the local community; and facilitating his team's visits to local elementary schools to read with the students.

Division III - Larry Kehres, Mount Union College

For the tenth time in 16 years, the Purple Raiders of Mount Union College sit atop Division III as national champions, capping a 15-0 season with a 31-26 victory over defending champion Wisconsin-Whitewater in the Stagg Bowl. In his 23 years as Mount Union head football coach, Larry Kehres' teams also have garnered 19 Ohio Athletic Conference titles and have posted 17 undefeated regular seasons. Coach Kehres has had his share of talented players to help produce this on-field success (six All-Americans in 2008), yet he also has help nurture classroom champions as well (five Academic All-Americans since 2006). Coach Kehres organized Mount Union's support of this year's national Coach to Cure MD project to help raise awareness and funds to fight Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He also encourages his student-athletes to participate in civic and community activities, with many players serving on the NCAA Leadership Conference.

''Nick Saban, Mickey Matthews, Chuck Broyles, and Larry Kehres embody the spirit of college football,'' said Greg Gordon, Liberty Mutual senior vice president, Consumer Marketing. ''Their commitment to responsibility, honor, integrity and excellence - on and off the field - has transformed their teams and will live on in their communities thanks to their legacy of strong civic and academic support.''

The 2008 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award recipients were selected from a group of 25 finalists: 10 coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) and five coaches each from the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA), Division II and Division III. To qualify as a finalist, each coach had to be among the top 25 fan vote getters in his division at www.CoachoftheYear.com and then be scored by an objective model that considers, among other criteria: wins, team penalties, on-field comportment, academic achievement by the student-athletes, and civic and philanthropic commitments.

Sodexo Foundation Accepting Applications for 2009 STOP Hunger Scholarships

Deadline is February 27, 2009; Up to five $5,000 winners to be named to recognize the next generation of hunger activists

GAITHERSBURG, Md., December 15, 2008 – As economic hard times shrink college savings accounts for many Americans, the Sodexo Foundation has increased the amount of its STOP Hunger Scholarships to $5,000. The Foundation will begin accepting applications on January 1, 2009.

Up to five students will each receive a $5,000 scholarship award and a matching $5,000 grant in their name, for the hunger-related charity of their choice. The scholarships will be presented on June 4, 2009 at the Sodexo Foundation Dinner in Washington, D.C. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in an accredited education institution (kindergarten through graduate school) in the United States and be able to demonstrate an on going commitment to hunger-relief activities in their community. In addition, up to 20 regional honorees will receive a $1,000 grant in their name, for the hunger-related charity of their choice.

“With a 17 percent increase in the number of Americans relying on food stamps, it’s more important than ever that the entire population comes together to help,” said Stephen J. Brady, president of the Sodexo Foundation. “It’s not enough just to feed people,” he added. “We have to stop the cycle of hunger and poverty. The STOP Hunger Scholarship program was designed to recognize young Americans who are committed to improving their communities in the area of hunger, and also to encourage this next generation to become activists in the fight against hunger.”

The Sodexo Foundation created the STOP Hunger Scholarships in 2007 to recognize and reward the great things young people are doing to fight hunger in communities across the country. To date ten national and 19 regional honorees have been named.

The deadline for applications is February 27, 2009. For a complete description of the program or an online application visit www.SodexoFoundation.org (access key: SDXF).

Many Students Forgo Borrowing Despite Financial Need

New Research Reveals Students Who are Least Likely to Borrow for College and Highlights Trade-offs They May Face

Washington, D.C., Dec. 8, 2008—For millions of students, the increasing cost of a college education, combined with lower rates of growth in grant aid, have resulted in additional reliance on student loans to pay for college. In 2003-04, 35 percent of undergraduates obtained a loan from federal, state, or other sources. The large and growing role of student loans presents both opportunities and concerns for students who enroll in college. For certain students, however, loans offer the ability to pay for necessary college expenses that they otherwise could not afford; for others, loans may result in significant debt without completing a college degree. In some cases, 45 percent of undergraduates make a deliberate decision not to borrow even when they have significant remaining financial need ($5,000–30,000) after receiving money from other sources.

A new report by the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP) and Excelencia in Education highlights the borrowing patterns of students who choose to enroll in college and provides suggestions about why certain students may not borrow, even when borrowing seems to be a logical choice. The study, Student Aversion to Borrowing: Who Borrows and Who Doesn’t, uses the demographic and enrollment characteristics of undergraduate students, as well as interviews with students and financial aid administrators, to gain a better understanding of students’ use of loans as a means to finance their college career.

TOP THREE REASONS WHY STUDENTS MAY NOT BORROW

  • Students may attend lower cost institutions or change their attendance pattern so that they face fewer expenses in a given semester and do not need to borrow. In 2003–04, part-time students at community colleges were substantially less likely to borrow. Even when they had remaining need of $2,000 or more, community college students were less likely to borrow than students enrolled in other institutional types.
  • Students may use other financial resources to pay college expenses and not have to borrow. Older students, independent students, and students who delayed their entry into college were less likely to borrow than their counterparts, despite having remaining need of at least $2,000. These students may be using savings or current income to finance their studies.
  • Students from certain racial/ethnic or immigrant groups may have a cultural or familial perspective on debt that encourages them not to borrow. For example, in 2003-04, Latino and Asian students were less likely to borrow than White and Black students, despite having at least $2,000 in remaining need after grants.

“An aversion to borrowing could be limiting college enrollment choices for some students, which is a possible indication of a larger problem that is related to student decision making,” said IHEP President Michelle Asha Cooper, Ph.D. “It is important to identify if there are certain patterns and behaviors of students who do not want to borrow in an effort to help financial aid administrators, high school counselors, and others target students who may need additional help in deciding how to finance their college career.”

STRATEGIES TO HELP STUDENTS UNDERSTAND BORROWING FOR COLLEGE
To help students better understand the risks and benefits of borrowing for college, several strategies could be used by policymakers and institutional leaders.

  • Help high school counselors and others address issues of loan aversion.
  • Develop institutional programs that extend financial literacy and offer emergency financial support.
  • Consider changes in the financial aid system to reduce the need for borrowing.
  • Evaluate the wisdom of prohibiting students who need or want to borrow from doing so.

“Given the vital role of student loans in higher educational financial aid, it is critical to understand students' perspectives on debt. With the college-going population becoming increasingly diverse and current heightened concerns among policymakers and the general population to finance-related barriers to the pursuit of higher education, this study offers the means to reach data driven decisions to better serve college going students,” said Sarita E. Brown, Excelencia in Education president. “Our two organizations share a commitment to the use of analysis and research to support and inform policies and practices to expand educational opportunities for students.”

Although the report points out that more research is needed, it is clear that where an aversion to borrowing exists, it is only part of a larger problem. Many students do not understand the long-term value of a college degree and the types of financial aid available. For students who are adverse to borrowing, there is also a need to explain the impact to which alternative strategies such as full-time work or part-time enrollment can reduce their chances for degree attainment.

Student Aversion to Borrowing: Who Borrows and Who Doesn’t, was funded by TERI, TG, and USA Funds. The full report is available for download on IHEP’s Web site at www.ihep.org and Excelencia in Education’s Web site at www.edexcelencia.org. This report reflects the ongoing collaboration between our organizations and the second joint policy report. Another collaborative report produced by IHEP and Excelencia includes How Latino Students Pay for College, which sheds light on affordability barriers to college access and success for Latino students.

The Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP) is an independent, nonprofit organization that is dedicated to increasing access and success in postsecondary education around the world. TG is a public, nonprofit corporation that helps create access to higher education for millions of families and students through its role as an administrator of the federal family education loan program (FFELP). Its vision is to be the premier source of information, financing, and assistance to help all families and students realize their educational and career dreams.
